the Warhammer for EK that we know is spooky grandiose and Gothic and recently it's also been quite High budget too which is kind of cool and honestly these days it seems like Warhammer is not only going from big screen strength to strength but is also over time developing its image into one which cannot be matched in its extreme Grim dark seriousness but Warhammer wasn't always like this in fact not too long ago Warhammer was weird as in really really weird Games Workshop before they were a household name and a UK High Street staple produced some very very strange Miniatures many of which are now considered rare or valuable by old Hammer collectors and Warhammer historians alike and they're pretty much impossible to get your hands on unless you have a lot of expendable income well I may not have a lot of money but I am at least well connected Ed and I'm here today making this video because I managed to get my hands on one of Warhammer rarest but also weirdest looking Miniatures ever and together in this video we're not only going to take a step back in time to when the miniature was sculpted to try and work out why Games Workshop was so weird but I am also going to use all of the old Hammer renovation skills that I have at my disposal to see if I can make this ancient hand sculpted lump of lead look worthy of its place in the annals of Warhammer [Music] history wait hold on there friend before we get into the video I quickly want to let you guys know some exciting news from today's sponsor me me again I'm the sponsor I gotcha that's right this video is sponsored once again by me and my own miniature range Rascal town which now includes a delightfully large selection of the world's fattest and most gribbly little goblins and also some fantastic additional scenery kits too including this one that we've just released for Christmas which has some of my favorite little guys that we've ever made like some frogs hiding in a pile of presents these bunnies sleding on a hole Badger and my personal favorite this adorable reindeer all tangled up in some festive lights which I am currently painting right now this new scenery kit and the entire Rascal Town range is available now for you to take home at Rog hobbies.com so you can get yourself or a loved one a little Goblin painting table present for the holidays anyways thank you so much for listening and back to the video as you may or may not know if you're new here I am a huge old Hammer fan and I have a pretty big collection of ancient and sometimes rare Warhammer Miniatures which I occasionally like to paint up to the best of my ability as a bit of a challenge because a lot of the time painting up those old hand sculpted Miniatures can be a little bit challenging so imagine my shock when after I posted my weird Warhammer miniature Iceberg video I received an anonymous package from a very generous viewer which included not only one of my favorite Miniatures of all time but one of the rarest Warhammer Miniatures ever wizard with a submachine gun therefore if you are watching this right now yes you the lovely human who sent me this wonderful generous gift I just want you to know that hi I love you very much thank you so much and this video is for you thank you thank you thank you so whilst I fixed this little guy up and getting Looking ready to paint let's do a bit of a history lesson first and find out who wizard with a submachine gun is and where he fits in with Warhammer as we know it now now well the short answer is that wizard with a submachine gun doesn't really fit in anywhere the miniature was released in 1986 and is often credited online as being sculpted by the illustrious Ali Morrison but when I asked Ally for some more information about wizard with a submachine gun he said that he hadn't sculpted that miniature but instead has sculpted his two brothers wizard with a chainsaw and wizard with a hand grenade obviously I later ran into Gary Morley who then said it may have been sculpted by Bob naith and that's kind of where my investigation is at right now I need to find a way to contact Bob to ask him if he's behind this masterpiece so forget Napoleon Dynamite's finding John blanch documentary I'm releasing my own version called in search for Wizard with a submachine gun riveting either way he was released all the way back in 1986 a full year before even the release of Warhammer 4k's first ever l/ rulebook Rogue Trader and his full title is L7 with the Le standing for limited edition and I absolutely love the Le limited edition range of Games Workshop Miniatures because they tend to be just the strangest minis I've ever seen in my life other limited edition Le Miniatures that you may have heard of include Classics like space skeleton dwarf with inferiority complex yes that is his actual name and of course another personal favorite of mine the chaos toilet remember chaos toilet he was like number two pun unintended on my weird Warhammer miniature tier list video cue the flashback [Music] flushback back then submachine gun wizard sold for just 60p and you can see him appearing in this old Citadel miniature flyer showcasing some of of games workshops quirky and eclectic pre 40K miniature ranges including Judge Dread and even Star Trek but most importantly as I discovered coincidentally during my research for this video this particular flyer also includes an ad for my favorite Warhammer miniature of all time ostrich man on horse horse who apparently was a free gift for all orders over1 and I just think that is so so cool that like two of my all-time favorite Warhammer Miniatures ever had this little bit of shared history it's such a fun coincidence I'm so happy I found that anyways during this time nearly 40 years ago Warhammer as we know it now was still very much in its infancy in fact the very first Warhammer fantasy Edition was still a baby having been released just 3 years ago in 1983 now I wasn't around in the 80s but I think as my frontal lobe slowly started to calcify into the adult form you see before you today I think I realized that maybe Humanity peaked in the80s and that's just because I think that people but most importantly their Creations were just so much weirder in a way which I just genuinely really really love think Willow Dark Crystal Labyrinth and things like eie metal and Frank fretta then pair it with absolutely incredible bands like Dio rainbow and manow War all singing about dragons and Chaos Wizards and swooning scantily clad buck and maidens then toss in a little bit of DnD D dragon's layer and Terry pret's entire body of work for good measure and suddenly a company of nerdy metal heads sculpting something like gandaf with a machine gun kind of starts to make perfect sense the mixing up of classic fantasy with sci-fi tropes such as elves in space dwarves in space and I guess gigantic beefed up Barbarian tyrants also in space kind of defined Warhammer 40 K's early years and submachine gun wizard for me does feel like one of the first steps gamees Workshop made into that classic and iconic blend of genres he's part absurdity part Innovation and all man and I think that all of this kind of shows why L7 has become such a beloved and highly sought-after relic of games workshops history and with that little history lesson out the way let's take a look at the miniature itself which is now finally in one piece he is old looking and a little bit dated too as a sculpt and that's absolutely fair enough because he is an old man he's older than me and was hand sculpted by someone who at the time was much much younger than me too so we will absolutely be letting all of that slide but if there is one toxic tray about me that I will never let slide is that I will always look at an old ugly lump of metal and think without a shadow of a doubt that I can fix him I mean them I mean a miniature with a paint job the first thing I want to do with this guy is obviously make him look baller and like the best version of this miniature which has ever been painted ever or I'll cry but also I want to pay homage to his original color scheme and the way he was painted whilst also adding in a few little modern twists the original Wizard with submachine gun has this kind of pinky red robe so I thought that was probably a good place to start but like I said I want to really push this guy to look his best and a normal old robe just wasn't going to cut it so I decided to try and zge him up a little bit more by doing some freehanding my original plan was to make a sort of wizard camo for his robes with big Moons and stars all overlapping but when I mocked up digitally it looked a little bit too busy especially given how creased up and wrinkled his SLE leaves are so I went with a much simpler kind of more spaced out smaller star pattern all over his robes which I think turned out really really nicely and also I swear to God this was totally subconscious and maybe coincidental but I made his robes look exactly like rince winds from the Terry pratchet books like basically one for one and this doesn't really surprise me because I decided that to get into the mood for painting this guy I'd listen to some old Terry Prater AUD audio books but I didn't even listen to like the rincewind ones it must have just awakened something in me like some kind of whimsical Sleeper Agent but yeah I thought that was kind of fun anyway I however was not going to give up on my idea of giving him some sort of military looking camo because I kind of thought it would be a hilarious way to tie him in a bit more with his General gunny theming so I decided to make his cloak at the back here have a classic camo pattern is it the best camo I've ever painted no does it Clash a lot with the ready pink robes and the star pattern absolutely and do I love it yes I do so shut up then I noticed that whilst a lot of people paint this mini to be all the same color at the front I do think there is a degree of sculpted Separation on some of his clothes here making this kind of draped apron sort of effect at the front so I decided to make that element look like something a little little bit more Warhammer and paint it like a huge wearable scroll and at this point I had a decision to make should this wizard be aligned with the armies of the Imperium of mankind or pledge his Allegiance and his soul to the forces of chaos and of course I picked chaos because let's face it he's a wizard with a gun and who else is going to let him sit at their table after I'd finished up all of his robes and cloak and I had done some pretty Swanky looking non-metallic metals on the trim here I am pretty proud of those there it was time to move on to a part which I was maybe looking forward to a little bit less and that is his lovely lovely face and I want to make it very clear that usually I absolutely adore painting old Warhammer miniature faces it brings me great great joy to see their little personalities and little hand sculpted quirks come to life when you start defining details and putting in some Edge highlights and it's one of the reasons why I really like doing these kind of I can fix him videos so much but this guy this guy was different firstly it was extremely tricky to actually get to his face because most of it was hidden under the brim of his very large hat meaning I had to pull out some pretty wacky angles just to get those basic details in but once they were in I swear to God I couldn't find his right eyeball anywhere there's this deeply sculpted eye socker on the right hand side of his face that I really really struggled with in a way I'm not really used to and I think I saw an eyeball in there somewhere but I just couldn't find an angle which allowed me to poke my tiny brush tip in there accurately enough to make it look good without making a mess of the rest of the socket my heart was saying skill issue but his eyes were saying accident an emergency eventually I cut my losses and I decided to do a deep recess shade inside the eye and just do my best to poke a little bit of off white in there and hope that it landed on the sculpted part of the eye in a way which would look at least neat adjacent which I managed to do pretty well so I'm not too mad at how the face turned out in the end and either way you can even see it when the miniature is flat on the base but I'll know I'll always know anyways once I had polished off the last few details on the miniature including his gun here which I decided to paint in a fetching shade of non-standard magical military green and his borderline nonexistent feet I still wasn't satisfied that I had like fully brought this miniature into the 21st century so I knew that he needed something more I knew that what he needed was a gimmick I love a good flashy gimmick on my Miniatures whether it's an impressive bit of OSL some impossible freehanding or a super fancy bass but for this guy I had something in mind already one of my fa flashy painters online is called el miniaturist who is known for his eye-catching painted special effects but one that I really love which I've never had an excuse to try is this lightning bolt sort of effect which looks simple enough to pull off it's just a little bit of twisty wire and some glue and Bam you have a neat effect on your miniature so that's why I decided that this miniature needed to be firing magical lightning bullets instead of just boring old lame regular bullets I found some pretty thin wire and ideally I think it should have been a little bit thinner than this but I think it turned out okay anyway and I set about twisting a few pieces into some random looking zigzaggy lightning shapes and then I very carefully drilled a hole into the barrel of the gun for the wire to sit in I glued all the parts together and I painted the whole thing to look like a magical fiery explosion and I really like this effect and how it turned out it was super simp simple it looks great and I think it gave the miniature that little something which it needed to take it to the next level now all he needed was a Bas and obviously he's getting a plinth because he deserves one but I decided to try and do some nice sculpting too and make this little Cobblestone texture for him to stand on but unfortunately after I had sculpted and painted it there was another pretty obvious problem this guy apparently has a lean a very extreme beam forward lean which if you place him flat on the base it means that all you can see when you look at him is the brim of his hat so unfortunately to counter that lean and to save my precious photography angle I had to do a little bit of Scenic stuffing around his feet and kind of given the classic foot on Rock main guy pose which actually turned out really nice in the end so I'm not too mad but R my nice sculpted Cobblestone base you were fun for like 5 minutes so now that he is finished to the best of my abilities all that's left to do is to reveal to you my personal take on one of War Hammer's rarest and weirdest Miniatures and here he is wizard with a submachine gun completed with a fresh paint job and some suitably Modern special effects this whole project has been such a delight to do and again I feel so lucky that I managed to get a hold of this absolute Treasure of a miniature and considering how old and dated the miniature is I do think that he has turned out great and I've managed to make him look much younger than he actually is like I said before I absolutely love collecting and painting old and rare Warhammer Miniatures and I'm sure that if you've watched the video up to this point then you probably have your own personal favorite or maybe one that you'd like to see me try and tackle on my channel so make sure you let me know in the comment section below which miniature you would like to see me perform my ultimate old Hammer makeover on next but I'm afraid that is all we have time for today as usual thank you so much for watching this video I hope you enjoyed it and thank you for being Rogues I'll see you in the next one bye byebye [Music] [Applause] [Music]
