hey everybody in this video we've been inspired by the aartis 2 trailer so we're going to be showing you a fantastic method of painting a Space Marine in the colors of the sides of the emperor for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop now this is seen as quite a tricky color scheme to do because there's a real contrast here with a really bright warm yellow but also a pitch black as well so getting around those two colors can be a little bit tricky but in this video we're going to be showing you a really great efficient way of doing it that looks great on the tabletop so we hope you enjoy it let's get started [Music] before we start painting I just want to share with you the miniature that I built up for our example here because I'm really excited about this one as in the estares trailer they always use the Mark 7 star power armor Marines of the firstborn I thought it'd be really cool in this video to do the same sort of thing and use a space bra wearing a classic suit of mark 7 power armor now if you pick up a tactical Squad you'll find the Miniatures do look quite small these days especially compared to a primary Space Marine but there is a way around this and that's using the Space Marine Heroes that Games Workshop put out every now and then because some of these series are actually wearing Classic Suits of power armor and these models are actually a bit bigger than the normal size Space Marines that come in the old tactical Squad box now I've got my example of miniature just here and you can see we've got the color plastic so the red plastic is the Space Marine hero figure I just cut him off his molded base and put them onto a regular base there and you can see the gray plastic parts they're all spare parts from a tactical Squad so all those parts are compatible so what you can do is just use the Core Body to make all sorts of different poses by mixing and matching with that tactical Squad now when it comes to the size as I mentioned these are a bit bigger than the older style ones you got in the Tactical Squad box and I can prove that by comparing it to first of all a chaos Space Marine so here I've got a word Bearer if I put them next to each other you can see they're the same height so they really look the apart when fighting against each other and also they're roughly the same size as primary Space Marine they are just a little bit shorter but that's what they're like in the law anyway so you can see when they're fighting side by side they're going to look like they belong together so really useful thing to know getting hold of these marines is just the right size for it now I know what you're going to say it's going to be expensive making an army entirely out of these blind boxes but there are ways around it and in fact these are strategies I've been using to make my own collection of these because one day I plan to paint a blood Angel's Army using these figures so what I tend to do is look on eBay for auctions where people are getting rid of the spares they don't want because as I mentioned these models come in blind boxes so people like to collect them all often they'll get duplicates and then sell them off quite cheaply so if you look out for these you can get loads real cheap also what I'll tend to do if I'm in a gaming store and some of these on sale every now and then I'll just buy one and put it into the bits box and if you do these sorts of things you'll find you end up with enough to do a small army before you know it certainly at least to do a tactical Squad if that's what you want to do so with all that out the way what we now need to do is talk about painting and when it comes to the size of the emperor we do have to consider that high contrast that we've got between the yellow and the black most yellow is a much more difficult color to paint than black is so what we should do is choose an undercoat color that helps out with that so for that reason what I'm going to do is prime my miniature with sunset yellow so this can here from the color Forge basically any sort of yellow primer will do absolutely fine but I'm going to go for this one so I'm just going to go outside now spray them mini ature yellow when we come back we'll start painting and here we have our tactical Space Marine wearing Mark 7 power armor ready to go now you might be thinking to yourself well could I keep some of those parts separate and under coat those black and then stick them together to make the base coating process easier you certainly could do so if you want to so for example you could just keep all the heads separate and spray them with black and then glue them on with super glue afterwards I prefer to build the whole model as one piece though where possible because I really enjoy the posing process especially with Marines like this all of all and socket joints and things like that but the choice is yours whatever you go for though the first thing to do is to really base coat in that nice warm yellow that we're looking for on the yellow parts of the armor so here you're looking for a kind of Sunburst yellow color the one I'm going to use is skulky yellow and to apply it all you need is a rough base coating brush so I have a medium base coat brush from Citadel here so all you need to do is thin the paint down with a touch of water to make sure it's nice and smooth just being careful not to overdo it with a brush of this size we're looking for the paint to be down to around about that sort of point there then I'm just going to be careful not to put on too much at once so we don't get a lumpy finish so there we go just going to remove excess paint load up fresh and then we're ready to go and so the parts of the armor we're looking to base coat with this color are going to be the core of the body so we're looking at the Torso going right down to the groin so all the way down here base coating down here not worrying about other details for the time being just making sure we get a nice even finish to these parts also you want to make sure that you base coat the backpack at this stage as well [Music] once you're happy with that base coat of yellow we can then move on to the next base coat which is going to be some gold and the reason why we're doing gold now is because both the gold and the yellow are going to take advantage of the same wash at the same time so is nice and efficient essentially so what you want now is a nice warm gold and I'm going to use some Dragon gold for this and to apply it I'm using a size Zero Brush from mopus now this is around about the same size as somewhere between a small layer and a medium layer brush from Citadel but basically you just need a brush of about that sort of size that holds a good point just so you got some accuracy with that paint once it's thin down and ready we can start looking for any decorations that need to be gold and this is going to be things like the device that we've got on the side of the Bolter just here so we just want to base coat this in at this stage but also if like me you're going to be painting your miniature in the colors of the second company you now need to make sure that you pick out the design on the chest as well so we're looking at this Wing skull design just around here with that base coat done too we can now move on to applying the first wash onto the miniature and here should be looking for a sort of warm brownish kind of color to add warmth to these tones that we've got so far so I'm going to be using flesh wash for this and to apply it I recommend going for a really fine brush the one I'm using is a size0 but really any small brush that holds a good point will be absolutely fine because we need quite a bit of control with this Bally what we need to do is just load up so that we still got that point on the brush and then on the yellow parts of the armor we're aiming for all the deepest recesses so for example if we look around the front of the body right here I'm going to be running it into the corners around the belt so for example just into these recesses just here we want to run it into that corner going down there then down next to these pipes all these sorts of things to get the shading on the yellow and should you happen to make any splashes of it just let it dry then clean it with that yellow before you move on when it comes to the gold it's a little bit different in the case of the gold we can tint the entire thing with this tone so here we're just going to paint it straight over the top letting it into those recesses and it's just a matter of giving it around about half an hour to dry the wash is now completely dry and I've had a quick look around that yellow just to make sure it's nice and clean and tidy and with that done we can now move on to adding the black onto the armor and to do this what I'm going to do is start out with an off black so basically a really really dark gray for the main color then use a pitch black for the shading in it so what we'll do is start out with that off black going to be using some death Reaper here which when you look at it on the palette on its own just looks like it's a pitch black so that's the sort of color we're going for here but actually it's just slightly lighter which is going to allow us to get that volume and depth as we add the black in for the shading now to apply it I'm starting out with my size Zero Brush here but you might want to have your rough base coat brush on hand for the easy to access areas the reason why I'm starting with this brush is because we're going to be going close to that yellow armor and so it's a good idea to use one like this as you negotiate all those tricky to reach areas so for example on the arm just here the whole arm is going to be black so a brush like this is ideal for getting in there to do the base coat where we're going right next to where that yellow is but you can see when you get to more open areas such as on top of the shoulder pad might want to switch to a large brush there the choice really is yours [Music] once you finish base coating that black you can see the model is really looking the part of a side of the emperor and also just made sure to base coat the casing of his boltgun there as well and so with that done we're now going to add some shading onto these parts and here I'm going to be doing something a little bit different rather than using a wash what I'm going to use is a pitch black thin it down with a bit of water and run this directly into the corners and the reason why I'm using this instead of going for a wash is because I want as much contrast here as possible so I'm looking for a really deep dark color and acrylic paint is going to provide us lots of control as we really introduce a dark color there like that so I'm going to use some Doom death black for this end to apply it and going for my smallest brush so I'm using my size0 here and what we need to do on the palette is just thin this down so it's a little bit Inky not quite as runny as a wash would be but not far off it basically this sort consistency here you see so a nice pitch black then make sure you remove excess paint off your brush and load up so that you got that fine point there on the bristles then it's time to start looking for any recess you can find on the black armor and run this color directly into the deepest area so for example on the shoulder plates we got the rim just here you can see I'm just going to paint this on in a downward motion just letting the bristles run into that deepest corner to give that dark black line for some shading once that's done you can see now we got some depth there in the black so it's time to move on to base coating some smaller details that we can all wash using the same color so here we're angling for a black wash and the first the colors we're going to base coat now will be for the silver here I'm going to use some cir coat silver and then we can move on sort of like a dark warmish brown for all the leather so here I'm going to use some curas leather finally it'll then be time to pick out the joints in the armor and here we want a gray so I'm going to be using some IDL on Gray we're going to be starting out with a silver so I've got cirat silver and to apply this I'm using my size Zero Brush and this is all for the various mechanical details and the vents and things like that across the armor so all you got to do is make sure the paint's thin down and under control on your brush and start working your way around looking for such features so for example it's going to be things such as the blade here on his combat knife but also it's going to be various bits and pieces to do on the Bolter so for example we got the barrel of the gun just down here that I want to very carefully pick out but also keep an eye on for the vents on the backpack such as these ones here and be sure to base coat these as well once you're happy with all of that silver it's then time to move on to base coating the leather and here you want a dark warm Brown so I'm using some Cur leather and this is going to be for his pistol holster just here and there's a little pouch just around here to do as well [Music] and then finally it's time to pick out all of the joints in the armor using a dark gray so here I'm using some idong gray and this is also an ideal color for any pipes too such as these ones on the body right here once that's done it's then time to apply some wash onto these three new colors that we've added and here we need that black wash so I'm using Oblivion black wash here and we need to be careful in the application keeping it just on these three new colors so for that reason to apply it I'm using my size Zero Brush here and when you're doing this just make sure when you load it up you don't overdo it so that you've got still Loosely a point there on the brush that you have the accuracy to control it as you put it onto these colors because for example we want to put it over things such as these pipes just here we need to make sure that we just keep it on the pipes and not on the surrounding yellow so just take your time be as neat as you can and apply this over this sort of off black that we've got for all the joints and pipes over the silver and over the leather as well [Music] the wash is dry so now we can move on to some more base coats that are all going to be sharing a wash and what we're looking at on this miniature is going to be the Purity seal down here but this is also going to cover any bones or any decorations you may have that are going to be either red or bone going to start out with the bone color which is ideal for parchment here I'm going to use Dragon Fang as the base coat and to apply it I'm going to be using my size Zero Brush once again so a nice good size for the sort of thing that we've got here as usual make sure the paint's thin down and then it's just a matter of looking around the miniature for all that parchment and blocking it in so in our case that's going to be this one just down here next up we need to base coat the wax on the pur seals and for the sides of the emperor this is normally depicted as being red so I'm going to go for Maroon here with some asmodus red and once that's done we can then apply a wash over both these colors at the same time and here we want a dark brown so I'm going to use some battl mood wash but first we need the asmodus red and to apply it I'm still going to use the size Zero Brush here and all we need to do do now is base coat that wax so you just need a small amount of this thinned and ready and it's just a matter of being as steady as possible as you go in just pick out this detail right here and when you're happy with that you're then ready for a dark brown wash so here I've got some battl mood wash applied to the size Zero Brush once again and all we need to do is paint it over both of these colors [Music] with that wash dry we can now do just a little bit of layering because what we need to do is make sure that the bone color we've just done is just brightened up before we move into highlighting the miniature so here I'm going to be looking at parchment but if your miniature has any bones on there you want to do the same thing on that too for this what you want is a slightly lighter sort of cream color than you used for the original base coat on the parchment so in our case I'm going to be using some skeleton Legion and to apply it again going for a smaller brush I'm once again using my size zero and with this we just need to apply this paint onto the flatter parts of the parch whilst carefully avoiding recesses so with that paint thinned down and made just a little bit translucent there on the pet we can start looking for the areas to apply this on and for the parchment you can see we've got some creases that go along it so what we want to do is Target the parts that were really raised up such as just there and the flat part beneath it whenever we get to a deeper recess where more of that wash settled just skip past it and Carry On Again on the other side there we are with that done we've now completed that phaser paint in the miniature and so it's time to move on to adding some highlights onto it now this is entirely optional you certainly don't have to do this if you don't want to and in fact if you don't want to I recommend you skip ahead now to where we painting the eye lenses then apply a transfers do the base and your models are going to look great on the tabletop but if you really want them to pop highlighting is what you need to do and so what we'll do is start out by highlighting that yellow here what you should do is pick out a brighter tone than you originally used so in our case I'm going to be using yellow flame and to apply it now you'll want a really fine brush so I'm using my size0 and what we're going to do get some Edge highlighting here to really emphasize the shape of the power armor and the trick to doing this is just to make sure that you thin your paint down first of all correctly and then make sure you load your brush correctly as well so to thin it down you can see what I'm doing is gradually getting a bit of water on my brush and I'm bringing it into the side of that big ball of paint that I've got just there and I'm gradually pulling more of the paint in basically what I'm doing is creating a very thin version and I'm pulling more pigment into it to thicken it up to get to The Sweet Spot that I'm looking for where it flows well from the brush but not so well that it goes out of control now it takes a little bit of practice to find this but once you got it you'll know just what you're looking for it's basically a nice smooth consistency the to the paint it's looking pretty good just there you can always test it by just loading up a small amount and having a go painting some lines on your pallet and if it flows easily from your brush like it's doing there then you got it at about the right point so the next thing to do is to load your brush and to do this I recommend first of all removing excess paint off there then just run it through that thin paint that you've got just twisting the bristel as you go to bring them to a nice point and so there we go we got about the right amount loaded onto the brush just there and so with this prepared we can now start looking for all the sharp comp edges and angles on the yellow parts of the armor and where possible approach the side of the brush and I am using the side quite close to the tip just there to get the Buckle and the belt and just move the model around with this sort of sweeping motion this way you get a sharp line following that edge really easily there like that it's all just a matter of making sure that you're comfortable then you keep moving the model around to make sure that you can approach it and catch that line now you won't always be able to do this because of the shape of the power armor sometimes it's a bit too tricky to get your brush into angles like that so sometimes you'll have to switch to using the tip of the brush instead now great example of that is going to be just around the collar just here beneath that Top Line of it the one that's right above where this chest design is and so here what I recommend you do is just angle the model so that you're painting in a downward motion towards yourself the tip of the brush and just follow the edge as neatly as you can here you can see the result of applying that highlight to the yellow you can see how it really helps Define all the shapes on the armor really clearly and so with that done we can now move on adding a fine highlight if you want to and this is something I'd normally reserve for characters and things like a captain or something but you can do it on everything if you want to basically what we're going to do is a second Edge highlight but more precisely this time with a lighter color so you want an even lighter yellow here I'm going to use some Craven yellow and to apply it again go for a small brush and if you decide to do this all you'll need to do is thin this down just like you did with that previous highlight and this time rather than looking for every Edge and angle we're just looking for the more prominent ones that really stand out or would catch the Light so like before get that paint thin and ready being careful not to overload your brush and then when you're ready ready we can start looking for these parts that really stand out and good examples would be the color of the armor just here where I'm just going to go in and skim across the middle on that part really stands out there like that it's just a small amount of the color there like that now further down doing things like the top of this buckle for the belt will be a good thing to do so we just going to add a little bit to this there and that corner there a little bit there and I touch towards the top of the round part right there like that so you see it's all precise Parts but what this does just help Define that shape even more [Music] once that's done the yellow parts of the armor are now complete and so we can turn our attention onto the black parts of the armor now here what we're going to do is start out by highlighting with a dark bluish gray which is going to give the black quite a cold feel and a nice contrast against that yellow so here I'm going to use some f blue now if you've done the second highlight on the yellow then you should do it on the black as well to make sure everything balances so if you want to do this what you'll then need is a light gray here I'm going to go for some carc caradon gray we'll start out with f blue and this is going to be just for the armor so don't worry about the bult going this stage or any of the weapon casings it's just for the armor that we want this color on there I'm using the size0 brush to apply this again because the application here is the exact same technique is what we used on the yellow and that we're looking for all those edges and angles so remember make sure you thin the paint down to the correct consistency and then be careful not to overload your brush that you got that good point on there and have that control because we're now looking for all the edges on the black details so for example if we look at this leg just here we want to go around this knee pad so with the tip of the brush I'm just going to be skimming down there like that to get that dark blue Highlight along there then we can do the side too and you can see I'm always changing the angle of the miniature to make sure I'm comfortable to give the maximum control as we follow these edges once you finished applying that first highlight if you did the second highlight on the yellow then we should do a second highlight on the black as well and if you decide to do this what you'll need is a light gray I'm using some carc caradon gray and just like with that second highlight on the yellow we're looking for really defined areas that are standing out such as the top of this knee pad just here where we're looking for the curvature top same on this one as well again just do a fine line just retracing your steps from that previous highlight just ever slightly narrower also we're looking for areas at the top of the shoulder plate just here where it'll catch the line at the top top of the helmet such as just along the top of this little intake that we've got around here again it's very gently skimmed on just to build up that color now we can also use this light gray as a highlight on the joints in the armor so for example the one just here what we need to do is add a few lines just to pick out the texture of this Ridge joint [Music] and with that we've now finished highlighting the black and also the yellow parts of the armor so it's time to move on to highlighting some smaller details and we'll start out with the gold here I'm going for some glistening gold then we should move on to the other metallics the silver here again we want a bright color so I'm going to use mithil Blade with that done we can then move on to some other details in the miniature starting with the leather here I'm going to use some bide and then for the gun casing what we want is a sort of dark gray color so I'm going to use some dungeon Stone gray here but first of all we need to highlight that gold so I'm using glistening gold applied again with a size0 brush and this is more or less the same sort of technique as what we've just been doing on the armor where we're looking for edges and angles but as a matter of again just making sure the paint's thin down and ready and then you just got to start looking for them so for example we got the design here on the chest and what we're going to do with this is just carefully move in with the side of the brush and start skimming across the race details so for example just along here now that we've got that gold highlighted we can move on to the silver so here I'm using some mythal blade and I'm going to be applying this in the exact same way we're now finished with the metallic so it's time to move on to highlighting the leather and here I'm going to go for some bhide applied still with a size0 brush and this one's going to be a case of still applying along the edges and things but feel free to add a few dots and just one or two little lines onto the flat areas just to give a bit of texture to that leather [Music] and then finally we can move on to a dark gray now this is going to be for the casings of the weapons so here I'm using some dungeon Stone gray and I'm going to be applying it in the exact same way as what we did on the Black and Yellow on the power armor earlier where we're looking for all those edges and Corners I want to carefully follow each one and now that's done we can move on to doing some finishing touches and we'll start out by completing that Purity seal now for this we can start by highlighting the wax with a quite bright red so I'm going to use some Demon red and then for the parchment we want a light bone so here I'm going to use vampire fang now with that done if you want to add some texture to that parchment you know at the right moment to do it and here what you need is a dark brown so I'm going to use some curas leather but first of all we need to highlight the wax so I'm using demon red and to apply it I'm sticking with my small brush so this is still the size0 here you don't need very much of this color just a small amount thinned and ready on your brush just making sure it's a little bit translucent then we can start picking out the raised parts of the wax so what we should do is go around the outer edge of it with a few dots just to give that slightly lumpy texture so just dotting there like that and then just do a little squiggle in the middle as well when you're happy with that it's time to move on to a light bone color so here I've got some vampire fang and with this to begin with we should go around the outer edge of the parchment just avoiding any parts where it goes into deep Shadow and then just do a few lines across the peaks of these creases just to bring them out too and then finally if you want to add some text to the parchment what you'll need is a dark brown so here we've got some curas leather which are thin down so it's a little bit Inky and with the tip of the brush just do a few squiggles running along the parchment like this to give the impression of text now we've got that done the last thing to do is to pain in the eye lenses on the helmet and here red is the color to go for so I'm going to go for a kind of glowing effect by starting out with a pure white going to use some white star here and then we need to go over the top of that with a red stain it so here what you want is a quite a thin paint like an Inky paint I'm going to use some red glaze for this but if you don't have access to it then blood angels red from citadel's contrast paint is a good alternative for it but whatever you choose we need to start out with that white so here I'm using some white star to apply it to go for your finest brush so I'm using my size0 once more here and all we're aiming to do is to paint a line in the middle of each of the recesses of these ey lenses so the trick is to thin the paint down as if you're going to be doing more of that edge highlighting with it so it's nice and smooth and flowing easily from your brush then remember to make sure you don't overload it because what you need to do is brace your hands to be as steady as possible just turning the angle of the model slly comfortable carefully go in with the tip of the brush and just paint a line down the very middle of each ey lens once you've got those white lines done it's then time to move on to the red glaze so here I've thinned it with just a of water and I've only got a small amount of the brush because what we want to do is just wash it into that recess area of the eye so that it shows through really brightly across that white and with that done we've now finished painting our sides of the emperor Space Marine and so it's time to start putting the transfers on the miniature when it comes to the transfers you might be wondering what ones to go for but for most of the markings like tactical Squad markings and things these are just the same as the ultramarine style ones so it's very easy just to use those but for the chapter Badges of course we're looking for something a little bit more unique now Games Workshop don't actually make transfers for the size of the emperor but you can find them online and I have one such sheet that I bought of etsy you can see this has plenty of markings to be able to do an entire Army and it's got some cool additions as well for your vehicles and things like that so I recommend just picking up one of these cuz it'll cover you for your whole Army so what I'm going to do now is apply the transfers to the miniature and then it's time to base it as ever for your Miniatures it's entirely up to you what scheme you go for but for my example here I'm going to do an urban Rubble base [Music] and with those transfers now applied and the base fully painted the sides of the emperor Space Marine is complete and ready to probably die in glorious battle against overwhelming numbers of tyranids so when it comes to painting this chapter the real challenge of it is negotiating that high contrast that we've got between that really warm yellow and the really deep black and the easiest way to do this is to start out with a yellow undercoat so I definitely recommend that you do that and then concentrate on painting the yellow Parts first before doing the black Parts afterwards now in this video we did of course use a Space Marine wearing Mark 7 power armor so real classic appearance and if you really like this style of Space Marine but you want ones that match the current scale that appears in 40K then I definitely recommend you just keep your eyes open for good deals with reject space between Heroes figures that people don't want anymore because if you manage to get some of these with some nice deals then you'll find you can build up an army really quickly so have fun and we'll see you again very soon
